ELIZABETH

The main waterway in Elizabeth is the Monongahela River.

Elizabeth Township, Elizabeth Borough, and West Elizabeth are all municipalities along the Monongahela River. Among the earliest industries of Elizabeth were glass making, coal mining, safe making, and steamboat building. In 1787 ‘Elizabeth Town’ was founded, named after Colonel Stephen Bayard’s wife Elizabeth Mackay Bayard. This area originally spanned the entire triangle between the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers, but has since been separated into Forward and Lincoln Townships. West Elizabeth was incorporated in 1848, sharing the coal and boat industry of the East. Coal was transported from Elizabeth to Pittsburgh along the Monongahela River for decades before many mines became abandoned, and now underground mines discharge acid mine drainage which affects Fallen Timber Run and Wylie Run.
