Duquesne
The waterways in Duquesne are the Monongahela River, Nine Mile Run, and Thomson Run.
The City of Duquesne, incorporated in 1891, is characterized by its hills, floodplains and industry. Duquesne Works was an active steel mill in the 1900's with the largest blast furnace in the world. The Works produced steel rails in a twelve-furnace open hearth plant that continued to expand until its closing in 1984. It has since become a host for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The mill dumped extensive amounts of blast-furnace slag and waste into the nearby Nine Mile Run, which became the subject of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers restoration funds in the early 2000's. Thomson Run is considered ‘impaired’ by the PA Department of Environmental Protection, and it was found that the high metal content from Acid Mine Drainage harms aquatic life.

The City of Duquesne provides drinking water and PA American Water provides sewage treatment in Duquesne.

The Water Department automatically shuts off water supply to households with delinquent accounts, so be sure to talk with someone if you are at risk for being without water.
The City of Duquesne has provided a Drinking Water Quality Report (linked) which shows high levels of lead and copper in 2024.
If you suspect you have a LEAD service line you would like to test, please contact the City of Duquesne Water Department by calling 412‐466‐8535 (Monday through Friday 9 am — 4 pm).
PA American Water has multiple customer assistance programs.

If a member of your household has a medical condition that requires water services and you know you will have trouble making a payment, call 1-800-565-7292. If you have a Protection From Abuse (PFA) or other court orders then you can have protections placed on your water service. To receive Protection from Abuse assistance, call 717-550-1538.

The ACCESS program is a door-to-door, advance reservation, shared–ride transportation program provided throughout Allegheny County and to destinations in adjoining counties within 1.5 miles of Allegheny County.

For an 85% discount on ACCESS fares for anyone aged 65 or over, call (412) 562-5353 and ask for the 65 Plus registration center nearest to you and its schedule. People with valid government-issued photo ID may apply through the mail.
