Clairton

Food

The main waterways in Clairton are the Monongahela River and Peter’s Creek.

The City of Clairton dates back to 1903 when a large steel and coking complex was built. In the 1950’s the city was thriving, but the decrease in demand for steel brought major challenges in the 1980’s. Steel and coke industries in Clairton still operate today and occupy large river-side areas. This leaves lots of room for error (e.g. spillage) when producing and transporting toxic materials.

Before the Clean Water Act, the Monongahela River was one of the most polluted rivers in the United States. It has been in recovery for over 50 years and we see lots of life returning to the river, but there are still ongoing pollutants that need attention. Peter’s Creek is a tributary that runs through Washington and Allegheny Counties before draining into the Monongahela in Clairton. It is used for wastewater disposal and is classified as a TSF (trout stock fishery). However, the DEP’s 2024 Water Quality Assessment found Peter’s Creek to be ‘impaired’ by pollutants and pathogens. This means it does not meet water quality standards that support aquatic life, recreational activities, or potable water.
