March 8th: Salt Watch Volunteer Sampling Day

Details: Three Rivers Waterkeeper, in partnership with Girls Running Sh*t, is hosting a Volunteer Salt Watch Sampling Day on Saturday, March 8th! Volunteer with us to help collect water samples in local tributaries and waterways around Pittsburgh to measure the chloride levels. This sampling effort, known as Salt Watch, is an initiative from the Izaak Walton League of America to monitor how road salt pollution impacts local waterways.

Details: Shell's ethane cracker plant in Beaver County faces key permitting deadlines this year, giving the public a chance to hold them accountable. Food & Water Action, BCMAC, and allies are hosting educational forums to inform residents about the process and how to get involved. To spread the word, Food Action Water is organizing door-to-door flyer distribution throughout March and April.

Details: The Shell Plastics Plant in Beaver County is polluting our air and water, threatening public health, and now seeking permit renewals that could increase toxic emissions. The Pennsylvania DEP will soon decide on these permits, and without public action, Shell may continue polluting unchecked. We can fight back by attending public meetings and submitting comments to push for stricter regulations. Join an upcoming educational event to learn about Shell’s permit requests, the risks involved, and how to take action. Organized by Three Rivers Waterkeeper, BCMAC, Food & Water Watch PA, Moms Clean Air Force, and Breathe Project.

Details: We're teaming up with Protect PT and Physicians for Social Responsibility to bring you a crucial conversation about the potential environmental and public health impacts in your community. We'll be discussing the Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill's NPDES application permit regarding leachate disposal into Speers Run/Monongahela River. This is an important topic that affects us all!

These monthly in-person field trips for students in Grades 6–12 offer exciting opportunities to connect with real-world scientists, engineers, and STEM professionals. Middle schoolers can spark their curiosity with engaging 40-minute hands-on workshops, while high schoolers gain valuable insights through Career Connections sessions with industry experts. This Super Science Saturday will celebrate Earth Day and explore activities related to our exhibition We Are Nature: Living in the Anthropocene! Meet and greet our exciting live animals, dig into nature-themed activities, enjoy a relevant movie on our big screen, and chat with local environmental experts to learn more about the impact humans have on Earth.
