Clairton
THE WATERSHED OF CLAIRTON
In Clairton, Peter’s Creek drains into the Monongahela River through the U.S. Steel Clairton plant. The creek is classified as a TSF (trout-stocked fishery), which has been issued to help protect the creek’s aquatic life. Peter’s Creek is a 16-mile tributary that runs through both Washington and Allegheny counties before draining into the Monongahela River in Clairton. It is used for treated wastewater disposal and is classified as a TSF (trout stock fishery). However, the 2024 Water Quality Assessment conducted by the DEP found Peter’s Creek to be ‘impaired’ by pollutants and pathogens. This means Peter’s Creek does not meet water quality standards that support aquatic life, recreational activities, or potable water. |
The origins of Clairton date back to 1903, when a large steel and coking complex was built, causing the city to grow significantly in population. In the 1950's, the city was thriving in business and culture, but the decrease in demand for steel production brought major challenges in the 1980’s. The steel and coke industries in Clairton still operate today and occupy large riverside areas. This leaves lots of room for error (e.g., spillage) when producing and transporting toxic materials.

Duquesne
THE WATERSHED OF DUQUESNE
The City of Duquesne is a municipality in Allegheny County along the Monongahela River. The City, incorporated in 1891, is characterized by its hills, floodplains and industry. Duquesne Works was an active steel mill in the 1900's with the largest blast furnace in the world. The Works produced steel rails in a twelve-furnace open hearth plant that continued to expand until its closing in 1984, but has since become a host for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The mill dumped extensive amounts of blast-furnace slag and waste into the nearby Nine Mile Run, which became the subject of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers restoration funds in the early 2000's. Thomson Run is considered ‘impaired’ by the PA Department of Environmental Protection, and it was found that the high metal content from Acid Mine Drainage harms aquatic life. |

Elizabeth
THE WATERSHED OF ELIZABETH
Elizabeth Township, Elizabeth Borough, and West Elizabeth are all municipalities along the Monongahela River. Among the earliest industries of Elizabeth were glassmaking, coal mining, safe making, and steamboat building. In 1787, ‘Elizabeth Town’ was founded, named after Colonel Stephen Bayard’s wife Elizabeth Mackay Bayard. This area originally spanned the entire triangle between the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers but has since been separated into Forward and Lincoln Townships. West Elizabeth was incorporated in 1848, sharing the coal and boat industry of the East. Coal was transported from Elizabeth to Pittsburgh along the Monongahela River for decades before many mines became abandoned, and now underground mines discharge acid mine drainage, which affects Fallen Timber Run and Wylie Run. |

Glassport became a municipality in 1902, eight years after the U.S. Glass Company called “The Glass House” was erected and set a precedent for steel, tool, coke and gas industries to follow. The unnamed tributary that runs through Glassport and drains into the Monongahela River is currently classified as ‘impaired’ by the PA Department of Environmental Protection due to an excess of silt from highway and roadside runoff. |

Homestead
THE WATERSHED OF HOMESTEAD
Homestead was chartered in 1880 and sits about seven miles up the Monongahela River from downtown Pittsburgh. Homestead Run and West Run are tributaries of the Monongahela, which are both classified as ‘impaired’ by the PA Department of Environmental Protection. They do not meet water quality standards that support aquatic life, fish consumption, potable water, or recreation. A railroad, glass factory, and iron mill caused the population to boom after 1883, bringing in money and shipping out natural resources. The Carnegie Library of Homestead was opened to the public in 1898, and the historic district includes the site of the Homestead Strike of 1892. The Homestead Steel Works, which closed in the 1980's, was developed into the open-air shopping district The Waterfront. You can still spot the smoke stacks that once filled the air with byproducts. |

McKeesport
THE WATERSHED OF MCKEESPORT
McKeesport is a municipality in Allegheny County along the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers. The city is a suburb of Pittsburgh that was settled in 1755 by Scottish colonist David McKee, during which time ‘Queen’ Aliquippa was the ruling chief of the local Mingo Seneca clan. As David and his son John McKee sold plots of land at the turn of the 19th century, McKeesport grew into a bustling mining town until it’s first steel mill was established in 1851. The National Tube Works was opened in 1872, and the city became a national center for steel manufacture as ten major steel companies merged to form U.S. Steel. Most legacy contamination is due to spilled fuel and heavy metals. Since the decline of the steel industry, McKeesport’s population is considerably smaller and now faces contamination issues such as PFAS in drinking water. Crooked Run, a tributary of the Monongahela River, is classified as 'impaired' by the PA Department of Environmental Protection due to an excess of silt and sediment. |
If you see someone dumping waste, call the City of McKeesport: (412) 675-5020
