THE WATERSHED OF CLAIRTOn
In Clairton, Peter’s Creek drains into the Monongahela River through the U.S. Steel Clairton plant. The creek is classified as a TSF (trout stocked fishery), which has been issued to help protect the creek’s aquatic life.
Peter’s Creek is a 16-mile tributary that runs through both Washington and Allegheny Counties before draining into the Monongahela River in Clairton. It is used for treated wastewater disposal and is classified as a TSF (trout stock fishery). However, the 2024 Water Quality Assessment conducted by the DEP found Peter’s Creek to be ‘impaired’ by pollutants and pathogens. This means Peter’s Creek does not meet water quality standards that support aquatic life, recreational activities, or potable water.
The origins of Clairton date back to 1903 when a large steel and coking complex was built, causing the city to grow significantly in population. In the 1950’s the city was thriving in business and culture, but the decrease in demand for steel production brought major challenges in the 1980’s. Steel and coke industries in Clairton still operate today and occupy large river-side areas. This leaves lots of room for error (e.g. spillage) when producing and transporting toxic materials.
